What is EXIF data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a standard that specifies the formats for images, sound, and ancillary tags used by digital cameras, smartphones, and other digital imaging devices. It includes information such as the date and time a photo was taken, camera settings, camera information, location (if your device has GPS), and sometimes even thumbnail images.

What types of image files are supported?

Exif Viewer Online supports the following image formats:

  • JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)
  • TIFF (.tif, .tiff)
  • PNG (.png)
  • HEIF/HEIC (.heif, .heic) - limited support
  • Some RAW formats (.nef, .cr2, .arw) - limited support

Is there a file size limit?

Yes, the maximum file size allowed is 20MB per image. This limit helps us ensure optimal performance for all users.

Is my privacy protected when I use Exif Viewer Online?

Yes, we take privacy very seriously. All image processing happens in your browser, and your images are not permanently stored on our servers. They are only temporarily kept in memory during the metadata extraction process and are deleted immediately afterward. We do not collect or store your images or the metadata extracted from them. For more details, please review our Privacy Policy.

Why can't I see any GPS information in my image?

There are several possible reasons:

  • GPS information was not recorded when the image was taken (your device may not have GPS capabilities or GPS was turned off)
  • The GPS information was deliberately removed by another application or service before you uploaded the image
  • Some social media platforms and image sharing services automatically strip EXIF data, including GPS coordinates, when images are uploaded
  • The image file format doesn't support storing GPS information

Can I use Exif Viewer Online to remove EXIF data from my images?

Currently, our service is designed only to view EXIF data, not to remove or modify it. However, we are considering adding this feature in a future update. If you need to remove EXIF data, there are many free desktop applications and online services dedicated to this purpose.

How accurate is the EXIF data displayed?

We strive to display all available EXIF data from your images as accurately as possible. However, some camera manufacturers use proprietary tags or formats that might not be fully supported. Additionally, if an image has been edited or processed by software that modified the EXIF data, we can only display what is currently in the file.

Can I use Exif Viewer Online on my mobile device?

Yes, Exif Viewer Online is fully responsive and works on smartphones and tablets. You can upload images directly from your mobile device's gallery or take a new photo and immediately view its EXIF data.

Is Exif Viewer Online free to use?

Yes, Exif Viewer Online is completely free to use. We sustain the service through non-intrusive advertisements. We may introduce premium features in the future, but the core functionality will always remain free.

I found a bug or have a feature request. How can I report it?

We appreciate your feedback! Please contact us through our Contact Page with details about the bug you encountered or the feature you'd like to see. We're constantly working to improve Exif Viewer Online based on user feedback.

What do all these technical EXIF terms mean?

We understand that some EXIF data can be technical. We're working on implementing tooltips and explanations for technical terms. In the meantime, here are explanations for some common terms:

  • Aperture (f-stop): Controls the amount of light entering the camera
  • Shutter Speed: How long the camera's shutter remains open
  • ISO: The sensitivity of the camera's sensor to light
  • Focal Length: The optical distance from the point where light rays converge to form a sharp image
  • White Balance: Adjusts colors to make white objects appear white in photos
